  • Mostly, hearing damage happens due to repeated exposures to loud sounds 

  • The initial effects are small and may not be recognized by you

  • Listening at volumes above 50%

  • Keeping earphones on for almost the whole day

Certain personal risks can worsen damage by loud noise

  • Certain drugs or chemicals ('ototoxins')

  • Prior medical history such as repeated ear infections, head injury, genetic causes

  • Personal habits like smoking, vaping, other medical condition

Check if workplace noise is harmful

Check for signs 

  • Ringing/humming in ears when you leave work

  • Need to shout to be heard by coworker at arm's length 

  • Temporary hearing loss when leaving work

 

Check for workplace sounds  

  • Continuous background noise from machines, equipment or routine appliances (e.g. air condition units) that get noisier with use

  • Intermittent noise from machines that are not continuously used, heavy vehicles

  • Pulsing noise from heavy machinery, equipment

  • Throughout the day

  • During particular shifts

 

Check if you are practicing hearing safety

  • Following Hearing Conservation policies practiced in your workplace 

  • Wearing appropriate Hearing Protection devices

  • Putting on the devices correctly 

  • Practicing safe listening outside work

  • Working collaboratively with your company to find and fix noise hazards
